What Is the 4-7-8 Technique?

The 4-7-8 breathing method, developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, is rooted in ancient yogic pranayama practices. It works by activating your parasympathetic nervous system — the part of your body responsible for rest and relaxation. Think of it as a natural tranquilizer for your nervous system.

When you're anxious, stressed, or having trouble sleeping, your body is stuck in "fight or flight." This breathing pattern interrupts that cycle and signals safety to your brain.

When to Use It

  • When you notice anxiety building up
  • Before a stressful event (presentation, difficult conversation)
  • When you can't fall asleep
  • After a moment of conflict or frustration
  • Anytime you feel overwhelmed and need to reset

Step-by-Step Instructions

Find a comfortable position — sitting upright is ideal. You can place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth throughout the exercise.

  • 1 Empty your lungs completely Exhale fully through your mouth with a whoosh sound. This is your starting point.
  • 2 Inhale for 4 counts Close your mouth and quietly inhale through your nose to a mental count of four. Keep it gentle — no need to force it.
  • 3 Hold for 7 counts Hold your breath for a count of seven. This is where the calming magic happens — your body absorbs more oxygen.
  • 4 Exhale for 8 counts Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound, for a count of eight. The long exhale is what triggers the relaxation response.
  • 5 Repeat 3–4 times That's one cycle. Do this 3–4 times. With practice, you can work up to 8 cycles.

Beginner tip: If the 7-count hold feels uncomfortable at first, shorten the counts while keeping the ratio (e.g., 4-7-8 becomes 2-3.5-4). The ratio matters more than the duration. You'll naturally extend the counts as you practice.

Why It Works

The extended exhale is the key. When you breathe out longer than you breathe in, you stimulate the vagus nerve, which activates your parasympathetic nervous system. Your heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, and your mind quiets. Most people feel a noticeable shift within one or two cycles.
